Balmy and breezy typical Iowa weather in August brought 21 racers to hammer out the ten mile time trial course in the lonely town of Lone Tree. This is also the time of year for putting down chip seal. We had some of that on our straightaways, which may have affected some riders finish times. Chris and I did spend a good deal of time carefully sweeping the corners on Monday evening, and we were glad that all kept rubber side down. We did however run into a problem with a motorist hauling a trailer who decided he did not want us on "his road" and buzzed as many of the riders as possible. Thanks to Mark Sorenson who telephoned the county sheriff and Larry Howe who obtained this guys licence plate number. Interestingly, last years final TT had someone run down a number of our signs, as well as calling the sheriff to report that there were bikes taking up the whole road.

On another note: Congrats to Shawna Dudley who won the drawing for the Specialized time trial helmet! You will go fast with it ...go girl!

A few notes:

I will be bringing along series results that have been compiled thus far. I few things i needed to change since our attendance for the series did not allow me to use more that two race times to compile overall standings. Most riders have only come to two or three races at the most, and some may not attend tonight's race. Given the situation, I will average the race times for the leaders of each category and that will determine the winners. Those names will then be put into a hat and the winner will be drawn for the prize from Geoff's Bike & Ski which is a time trial helmet from Specialized. The winner can then go to Geoff's and order the correct size and choice of color. We just did not get enough sponsors to get a prize for each category. We did not get enough riders to use race funds for a cash prize either.

I would love to hear from you as to whether you think we should continue the series next season. If there is a consensus that we need another Time trial series, then i will consider doing this again. It takes a lot of personal time and sweat equity to put on races. Frankly, I was hoping more racers would give it a try. If you don't, grass roots racing will go away. The excuse i heard the most was "I don't do time trials" well I hate road races and I do them anyway. It is good practice.

So i am done with my speech and hope those of you that hate time trials and or "they won't help my training" will try it on for size.

A big round of sweaty applause to all who ventured over to time trial number four yesterday evening. Hot and steamy best describes the race. You've no doubt heard the adage, " If you don't like the weather in Iowa, wait 5 minutes." Well as Chris and I pulled the last few signs off the road after the race, it started raining. It also dropped 10 degrees. Many thank-yous go to Mark Guthart, our official, Chris Jeffery, our turnaround official and Jason "poncho" Teggatz for awesome bike holding and otherwise cheering on our racers!

Finally we were blessed with perfect weather. 80 degrees, sun and mild winds made for some very fast times. My only wish is for more riders to come out and join in! Monika's SUMMER T T SERIES #3

Please note the word SUMMER in the name of the series. Honestly, I have had enough of the rainy, cloudy, otherwise unseasonable weather. Lets put our positive thoughts together and make next Tuesday, the 28th, have the finest weather so that I can be happy with a nice showing at number three in the time trial series.

June and July 's dates are the last Tuesday of the month. #5 in August falls on the 4th Tuesday of the month, not the last. Confused?

So far we have had two races. One postponed due to extreme conditions, and another threatening to be extreme. I will do my best to give you stats from the overall series leaders, however please note that most participants, thus far, have only done one of the two races. I will make a note in parentheses, as to whether this was an average for two races or just a time for one.
If you have raced in more than one category; ie. Men's cat 5, then next month Men's 40+, that's fine , but know that when I compile results for the series winners, I will place you in the higher category. This also applies to those who have upgraded to a higher category midstream.

As Chris and I set up the course at 3:45pm the sun peeked out of the clouds and a slight but noticeable wind was beginning to pick up. By 4:45 when we rode the course, there were some very looming dark clouds to the north west, but it was still a distance away, not really a worry. By the time we finished our ride, which was 5:15, there were sheets of gray vertically coming out of those same clouds in the distant horizon.

We only had 14 racers participate in my second time trial. As they came to the registration table I heard stories of massive downpours, tree limbs in the road and people driving with their warning flashers on on the expressway. It never rained in Lone Tree.

The second in the Time Trial series is today

The weather is looking favorable for the second race in the series. I will take 74 degrees over 50 and with lower winds and only a 30% chance of showers, it is vastly improved over last months. So maybe you can surprise me with a better turnout!

Here are some reminders for maybe some of you visiting my blog for the first time.

Dougherty Park in beautiful Lone Tree Iowa is the registration site. Begginning at 5:30 and closing very promptly at 6:15, since Chris and I need a little warm up. :)

Admission is $10 dollars, checks can be made out to Monika's Time Trial Series, and please include an additional ten if you are not a holder of a current USAC cycling licence. We do accept cash as well. :)

The course is 2 miles down the road from the registration point and is 10 miles (16.09 k) in length. It is an out and back course with some turns and a slight upgrade near the turnaround point. The course will be marked in one mile increments. We will have a turnaround official, so hopefully no one will shoot right past the 5 mile mark. ;) or get flats. (that's for you Rob!)

You are encouraged to stick around afterward for a while while we compile results and enjoy refreshment.

Time trial #UNO TOMORROW, April 26th!

We will go with whatever comes our way for tomorrow's time trial. The first of five, It should be fun, no matter. I am confident that the conditions will be FAR improved over last Tuesday.

Here are some reminders:

Registration is ON-SITE, and begins at 5:30, and closes promptly at 6:15!! If you think you might be running late, pre fill out a event release form, http://www.usacycling.org/news/user/story.php?id=1053
and write a check payable to Monika's Time Trial Series for $10.00 (if you have a USAC licence) otherwise you will need to fill out a ONE DAY form, which costs an additional $10.00

Registration is at Dougherty Park on the South end of Lone Tree. From there you will ride about 2 miles south on Wapsi Ave. Then right on 660th. about 40 yards from that corner is the start. First rider will be off at 6:30.

We will have refreshments post ride while we wait for our official results.

I know that 50 degrees and showers are not ideal, but chances for rain drop at 6:00pm to 30%, so hopefully all we will have to contend with is wet roads. Don't ya just love spring racing! :)

Todays Time Trial Cancelled due to horrible conditions

I waited until this morning to cancel being optimistic that maybe weather conditions would be better than we all expected. It happened twice for us last year. Instead, the forecast is worse with a colder temperature, (37degrees) thunder and now a 80% chance of rain. I don't think too many folks want to go out in it, let alone race in it.

I will post again if we can arrange a postponed race date asap. My apologies to anyone who might of been bad ass enough to show up and race. But personally, I did not want to stand there at registration or have my volunteers and official endure the nastiness that unseasonal weather like this is bestowing upon us!

Details for Tomorrows Time Trial

Here are the details for all of you before tomorrows race. Course: 10 miles out and back, mostly flat with a very slight grade near the turn around. Rules: All USAC rules apply and a helmet is required at all times. The course is open to traffic and the centerline rule is always in effect, including warm up. Race is on RAIN or shine. :) Directions: From I-80 exit 239, south on 218 to highway 22 exit to Riverside Casino. East on Hwy 22 to Lone Tree, south on Wapsi Ave. into Lone Tree. Registration is at Dougherty Park on the south edge of Lone Tree. Registration: Registration opens at 5:30 and will close promptly at 6:15! On-site registration only. $10. all categories, no late fees. All non usac licensed racers will need to pay an additional $10. one day licence fee. Checks are accepted and encouraged! Categories: Mens's 123, Men's 4, Men's 5, Men's 40+, Women's 40+, Women's 4, Womens123, Women's & Men's breakaway, Junior's and Tandem. Dates for races: April 19, May 24, June 28, July 26, August 23. NEW this year: overall prizes for total time of four fastest rides after last race on the 23rd of August.

2011 Monika's Summer Time Trial Series

Welcome to a new year of racing!

Race Dates: 4/19, 5/24, 6/28, 7/26, 8/23. Five total.

Just wanted to touch base with all of you on whats new and what's old for my series this 2011 season.

Some of the sponsors from last year will be bestowing goodies again this year; namely Geoff's Bike and Ski, IC. and Bluebird Diner on Market Street in Iowa City. Thanks to both businesses for asking me if they could help before I could ask them!

I am still working on sprucing my flyer and getting the routine info out to all of you, so please have patience with me, as I do have Mom duties that always call. :)

The course will remain the same, registration originating at the park at the far side of town in Lone Tree, beginning at 5:30. I encourage you to pre-fill out your forms prior to coming if you can . These forms can be found on the USAC website. Makes life much easier for Chris & I. Remember... we race this event too!

Cost is $10.00 per race (on site only) and a one day licence is an additional ten bucks. Checks accepted and encouraged.

Course is 10 miles total, out and back. Route is PAINSTAKINGLY marked. :)

Categories are: Men's & Women's Cat. 1/2/3, Men's & Women's Cat. 4, Men's & Women's Breakaway, Men's Cat. 5, Men's & Women's Masters 40+, Tandem and Juniors.

Lots of categories. New for this year is: An overall winner for the series for EACH category. You must race at least two races to qualify. I will take all of your finish times and throw out the slowest, then the average will be your final time for the series. We will try that out .

Also I will offer a Women's 40+ category. For all the times I have complained that it's just not fair to race against my "daughters", I feel I need to "put the money where my mouth is".

I am still working on finalizing prizes, but I know one of the big ones will be a TT helmet from Geoff's. Thanks Mr. Perrill! No Hed wheels here guys, sorry. :(

I will ensure that you all get a nice prize of beer, baked goods and maybe some schwag.

The first race is less than a month away; APRIL 19Th. Please help me s p r e a d the word! Time Trials seem to be plentiful this season, there is The Black Diamond TT thru ICCC, and Mr. Barry Carter and the ever popular Elkart series, now comes the DesMoines TT held the 4Th Thursday of the month, and my friend Conn Day is BACK with a TT every Thursday.

Even though the course was shortened by 3.2 miles; storms seemed to loom in the distance, as thunder taunted us; even though we had a friendly visit by the sheriff and a few of our signs were mowed down by an angry motorist. Even though....we still had 28 racers show up to say adieu to my race series for this season. Now all I can say is thank you to all who came to race and assisted Chris & I ( everything from loaning of signs to directing traffic to officiating and holding bikes )

Updates for todays time trial

If you did not get an opportunity to view my last post on bike Iowa, here is some important news. We are shortening the course due to very fresh chip seal on the last 90 degree turn before the five mile turnaround. it is too long of a stretch to sweep, and is deep to safely maneuver though. The course for today will be 6.8 mile in length. There is a short section of seal coat at about the 2 mile mark but this one is less hazardous, as it is on a straightaway. You should be aware that it exists however!

I have been closely following the weather for today. It looks like we will be fine up until around 5:00 pm. After that ther is a prediction of 60% chance of showers and thunderstorms. IF it is clear at registration/warm up time, we will proceed. If we do indeed get hit with the moving cell, I may call the race at that time. We will be there if it looks fine at the start. Hopefully it will miss us for once!

This Tuesday is the Final race of the series

As summer comes to an end, so is my time trial series. Tuesday August 10th is the last installment. I would like to invite all of the past participants as well as those of you who for one reason or another could not make it to any of the other dates.

Here is a recap of the particulars:

Registration is at Dougherty Park on the south side of Lone Tree. registration opens at 5:30 and closes at 6:15.

Ten dollars to race. If you have a pre filled out registration form and a check or exact change, that helps me out a lot. If you do not have a current USAC racing licence you must pay an additional $10.

The start is two miles down Wapsi Avenue from the registration site, on 660th. First rider is off at 6:30.

The course is a total of 10 miles, mostly flat with corners. It is an out and back course with a turn around at the 5 mile mark. We mark the course in one mile increments.

For the winner of each category, we have a small prize. Anything from a six pack of beer or a cake to a tee-shirt. stick around afterwards if you can, even if you don't win your category.

We have a category for those without TT bars on your bike. That's to even the score!

I will be posting again just prior to the race, so keep in touch and hope to see you Tuesday evening for more fun racing.

It was senior special day in Lone Tree, IA. that is, for time trialists over 50! I am pleased with the fantastic turn out, especially with the senior racers. I haven't counted, but we could of been in the majority for a change.

Special thanks and kudos goes to Kim West and Sue Cook who took the Tandem category, (sorry I was such a sore looser, think the heat effected my brain!) and John Adamson and Kathleen Porter for making the trek over.

In old news, Paul took first again. Dan "the Man" grabbed second and Rob "you keep geeting faster", took the third spot overall. Plus...we had TWO tied times.

Other mentions of fame: Karen Stierler's sweet time of 25:16 which was ninth overall. Geez Guys, talk about gettin "girled". ;^)
Will Schorg wins the "coolest rig" spot with his track fixie. Nice time for you too Will.

To everyone else, glad you could share my special day with me, it means a whole lot.

TIme Trial Time this Tuesday the 13th!!

Since I don't put the races on the same Tuesday every month, the next one is only a few days away. A lot of you will be travelling over to Clear Lake this weekend to do some fun racing. So I would like to remind everyone that the next race is coming up swiftly so it does not get forgotten in the excitement of the weekend.
This one will be very special. I will not falter on my original idea of discounting seniors. Five bucks will get you in if you are over 50. Proof of age required ;) It is my birthday gift to you.

Also...plan on joining Chris & I for some pizza and beverage post race, at the Sanctuary Pub. If you don't see yourself riding 10 miles as fast as you can, it's 'ok', come on down anyway. Since Chris & I run the show, we will probibly be the last to get there, so prepare a spot for us.

Results for Monika's Time Trial Series #3

The "Weather Gods"were smiling favorably on all of us yesterday evening. The forecast went from a 40% chance of thundershowers to 10%. Albeit very hot and humid, the turnout was great. We had 36 participating, with a large Cedar Rapids contingent. They drove a very deluxe Motor Home over, which could of come in handy if it did storm.
We did not get the lightning, but in exchange we received a gift of fresh seal coat in patches on the road and in the first turn. I am positive it effected everyones times. Keep in mind, it is Iowa rural roads and to be expected unexpectedly!
Thanks to all who stuck around afterward to refresh and catch up. Kudos and thanks for all your help goes to our Chief Ref., Larry Howe and Brian Abott, asst. ref. To Will, who stepped in as turnaround assistant at the last minute to get my ass out of hot water. Stiegl for you when you come back again Will!

July 13 is the next Time Trial. I am celebrating the fact that on that precise day, my racing age will equal my real age. Plan on coming!

Welcome....

some particulars for those who are just visiting the site:

Time trial is in Lone Tree and begins in Dougherty Park on the far side of town. Registration opens at 5:30 and closes promptly at 6:15 (so Chris and I can race too!) Out and back course, 5 miles out, 5 back. Flat, with corners. ten dollars for the race, and 10 if you need a one day licence.

Ok..here's the dope. Weather has generally been rainy, wet and humid. Life still happens. It also happens that we must go on with our show. It will be hot today. If it does rain it will feel ok. Winds should be low, if it is not storming. I will NOT start the race if it is too inclement. we will wait it out if possible. I'm having a "show up and see" attitude. Last race it looked like rain also, turned out ok. Give it a shot.

Thanks so much for coming out to race and trusting the weather to keep us dry. The clouds looked a little surly, but the weatherman claimed only a 10% chance by 6:00pm. Seemed like all of us were ready to ride, no matter what was in store. We had some out of town guests as well. Thanks to the mostly Rev. Reminders for tomorrows Time Trial:

Registration opens at 5:30pm and closes 6:15 at Dougherty Park in Lone Tree. The first rider is off at 6:30. If you do not have a USAC licence you may purchase a one day for $10.00. The cost of admission is $10. for ten miles of Time Trialing! Juniors are in for 5 bucks. (see blog below)

The weather is looking favorable. Rain is forcasted to cease around 3:30 or so. Sun should be peeking out by the time we line up. even though the temps are coolish, nothin like a hard effort to warm you up. So will you join me? It is rumored that we will have the pleasure of the presence of Grandpa Kim and his "female companion", and others from the land of DesMoines.

Just a few things:

~Let me know if you are on a non-time trial rig. I will put you in the breakaway or "Eddy Merckx" (as it is often called) catagory. I don't always know what kind of bike you are on.

~ There are prizes, so if you win a catagory, you must be present to take it home. I will not deliver to your doorstep.

Next Tuesdays' Time Trial

Welcome back!

As I am focused on another exciting Time Trial in Lone Tree next Tuesday, I have some thoughts to share with all of you.

Next tuesday is my Great Dane, Apollo's 6th Birthday. To celebrate, all junior racers get half off of the entry fee. What do juniors have to do with Apollo? I wish he was still a "junior" but sadly he is a "senior". Don't worry, I will have a "senior" special on my birthday, which is in July!

At the last TT, which was held in April, dusk came early. Many that rode out to race left at races end to beat the ensuing darkness. As that is very wise, a few of you missed your prizes. We have some nice ones worth hanging out for in my opinion. Such as coffee from Cafe del Sol, gift bags fron Q7 Cycling & 30th Century Bikes, baked goods from the New Pioneer Coop, gift certificates to Bluebird Diner, etc... We strive to get those results back ASAP, so hang out with your friends, and chill. Dusk will arrive much later this time!!

As we approach the April 20th date, I have some information to share with you.

We have yet one more sponsor of prizes, New Pioneer Co-op has graciously agreed to help us out with prizes. Thanks goes to Theresa Carbrey for her support!

As I rode through Lone Tree On Saturday, I realized there are infact two parks! The park with the army tank is not where we are registering, ours is on the other side of town!

The course is marked in one mile increments, with half mile marks before the turn around and finish.

Tuesdays forecast calls for 72 balmy degrees, partly cloudy, with only 10% chance of showers. I'll take that forecast any day! Hope to see you there.

On another note; Chris & I were discussing the series yesterday while enjoying great weather on our deck. Some have inquired as to why only 10 miles for the length of the race. I believe it is a good midweek length for training. However, you can always race it twice. Keep in mind that there will be two entry fees if this is your choice. You could mix it up and race once with your Road bike and then with the TT bike. We do have a breakaway catagory. How punishing is that? ;)

Hi everyone,

Thanks for visiting my Blogspot. Things are coming right along with this exciting time-trial series.

Sponsors are rolling in as the road race season is already underway. As the first date approaches, which is Tuesday, April 20th, I will be filling you all in on various details and answering any questions you may have. Always feel free to contact me either directly or through my blogspot.

I decided to have this race "happen" to help us train efficiently for some of the bigger weekend races and dates this season. I have always loved grass-roots racing. My goal is to help fill our schedule with fun training races that will benefit all of us(no matter what club) in the end.

Monika’s 2010 Summer Time Trial Series
Presented by Iowa City Cycling Club

First rider off at 6:30 pm
Entry Fee: $10
Prizes: Merchandise, usually food and beverages
Dates: Tuesdays; April 20, May 11, June 22, July 13, August 10

Course 10 miles, out and back, mostly flat with a very slight grade near the turn around.

Rules All USAC rules apply and a helmet is required at all times. The course is open to traffic and the centerline rule is always in effect, including during warm-up. Race is on, rain or shine. Promoter may decide to delay start time due to severe weather in order to insure rider safety.

Directions From I-80, exit 239 south on 218 to Hwy 22 exit to Riverside Casino. East on Hwy 22 to Lone Tree. South on Wapsi Ave. into Lone Tree. Registration is at Dougherty Park on the south edge of Lone Tree.

Registration On-site registration only. $10 registration for all categories. No late fee. Registration opens at 5:30 . Non-USAC riders are required to purchase a 1 day USAC license ($10) Checks accepted.
